When It Falls

American Analog Set played one of their final New York City shows last night at Mercury Lounge, a show that I was really excited about seeing since they're not going to be touring as a band anymore. I was hoping to meet up with James and Andi there and say hi to the AmAnSet guys but I totally forgot that Caleb was flying in to see me.

It was a tradition: Once a year, my closest friends Paige, Foster, Caleb, Wayne, Philip and I would fly home to New York around the holidays just to catch up on each other's lives. One year, we rented a cottage on Prince Edward Island and napped all day to the sound of crashing waves and walked along the water's edge with a huge blanket swathed around us. And at night, the six of us would huddle around the fireplace. It used to be that way. Now there's one less of us. And the rest have scattered to the corners of the Earth.

My other close friends: RR, David and D. It was almost a year ago that the four of us went off to a baron town called Margaretsville. Otherwise remembered as Fox Ridge. With an entire house to ourselves, we found our freedom within those four walls. We made each other laugh, dancing around the house like happy free children while I chased them around with a camcorder until the early hours. And at nightfall, it was that fireplace again. Now our close-knit circle has begun to fray.

Everything I need is sleeping on my bed right now.
